Growing up in California, I was used to my home dominating the international headlines. Hollywood, wildfires, earthquakes, Silicon Valley, politics—it felt normal to live in a place that was constantly in the spotlight. This summer, however, all eyes seemed to turn toward another place: Spain.
For many Californians, Spain has always been a dream destination, known for its history, beautiful cities, incredible food, spectacular beaches and, of course, football. It was where people came to relax, learn Spanish and enjoy life—not a country that usually dominated the news.
But this year, something changed. Spain was everywhere. The world celebrated another football triumph, followed the record-breaking summer heat, watched devastating wildfires spread across the peninsula and, later, turned its attention to an extraordinary eclipse.
In the middle of it all, my brother flew over from Silicon Valley. He arrived full of questions about this "newly discovered" Spain, and I suddenly found myself explaining things I hadn't realised I'd stopped noticing: late dinners, afternoon siestas and the seemingly endless fireworks that accompany every summer fiesta.
Then our conversations shifted to eclipse glasses and the best place to watch one of nature's greatest spectacles. So we drove five hours to Almazán and climbed to the highest point of the old town walls.
Around us were people who had travelled from across the world. Every language seemed to be represented. And once again, Spain found itself at the center of the world's attention. As the light slowly faded, the temperature dropped—a welcome relief after weeks of intense heat—and an unexpected silence settled over the crowd. For a few extraordinary minutes, thousands of strangers stood together, looking at exactly the same sky.
Watching the eclipse with my brother reminded me of something I had almost forgotten. After living in Spain, many of the things that had once amazed me had quietly become part of everyday life. It took seeing them through his eyes, and through the eyes of people who had travelled from every corner of the world, to remember just how extraordinary this country really is.
Driving home, I realised that headlines tell only part of the story. The real Spain isn't found in football victories, heatwaves or wildfires. It's found in village squares filled with neighbours, traditions passed from one generation to the next, and moments like this—standing beneath an eclipsed sky, surrounded by strangers who, for a brief moment, all shared exactly the same view.
For one unforgettable summer, it felt as though the world had looked toward Spain. And I was reminded why I chose to call it home.
Why did Spain capture the world's attention this summer?
Spain became the focus of international attention through sporting success, record-breaking temperatures, devastating wildfires, and one of the year's most remarkable astronomical events. Visitors from around the world travelled to experience the country and witness the eclipse.
What surprised me after living in Spain?
Sometimes living somewhere makes extraordinary things feel ordinary.
When my brother visited from California, I realised I had stopped noticing many of the things that first amazed me: late dinners, lively village fiestas, afternoon siestas and the relaxed rhythm of everyday Spanish life.
It reminded me that seeing a country through someone else's eyes allows you to rediscover it yourself.
Why was the eclipse such a memorable experience?
Standing on the ancient walls of Almazán, surrounded by people speaking dozens of different languages, I realised that everyone was looking at exactly the same sky.
For a few unforgettable minutes, nationality, language and background disappeared.
The eclipse became something we all shared.
What does this teach us about culture and language?
Learning a language isn't only about grammar.
It's about understanding the places, traditions and people that give words their meaning.
The more we experience another culture, the more naturally language becomes part of our lives.
