One sandwich. Two cultures. Endless conversations. 🥜🍓One of our young students discovers a true American classic as she prepares her very first Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich. Through simple recipes like this, children don't just learn English—they experience the traditions, flavours and stories that connect cultures.

When Spanish explorers and settlers crossed the Atlantic and established communities in what is now California, they introduced horses, grapes, oranges, cheese, figs, chickens, and olives, to name just a few. These all became an integral part of Californian culture. And yes, California has shared avocados, pistachios, Google, Apple, Hollywood, California rolls (sushi!), and modern winemaking techniques. Yet one gem continues to be left behind. It's an American classic that has not yet found its way into the almuerzos of Spain. As an ambassador of language and culture, I  think it's time to share this exquisite American lunch staple with the people of Spain: the Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich.

Peanut butter is simply ground peanuts in their purest form. It is high in protein, nutritious, full of energy and, as we say in America, it "sticks to your ribs"—keeping hungry children full and satisfied when they're eager to run off and play tetherball or four square on the playground.

The jelly adds a complementary gooey sweetness with just enough fruity acidity to balance the richness of the peanut  butter, all spread between two slices of bread. We grew up on it, our kids grew up on it, and we still love it.

Americans have a habit of putting peanut butter on almost everything. On toast with honey? Absolutely. Apples? Just dip them in! Celery? The perfect balance of crunch, freshness, and salty goodness. One of my favourites is a peanut butter and banana sandwich; or, instead of bread, spread on a rice cake. And for dessert? Peanut butter with chocolate is hard to beat! To my Spanish friends, this may sound somewhere between fascinating and slightly alarming. Yet after one bite, many quietly admit, "Well... it's actually quite good."

We also use it as a quick energy boost while hiking, skiing, or participating in endurance sports. I have even seen pilgrims taking a peanut butter break along El Camino, although they looked a little more American than Spanish.

Over the past few years, I have noticed a gradual acceptance of this American staple. A few years ago, the only place I could find peanut butter was in Decathlon, tucked away next to the protein supplements. Today? It's sitting proudly on the shelves of Mercadona. Progress!

I don't expect the PB&J sandwich to replace the beloved bocadillo any time soon. Frankly, Spain has had several hundred years to perfect its bread and jamón. But perhaps there's room for one more sandwich in the lunchbox. After all, California has been enjoying Spanish olives, oranges, and grapes for generations. Maybe it's time Spain gave peanut butter a chance.

What is a Peanut Butter & Jelly (PB&J) sandwich?

The Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich—often called a PB&J—is one of America's most iconic lunches. Made with peanut butter and fruit jelly between two slices of bread, it has been a favourite of children and adults for generations thanks to its simplicity, nutrition and great taste.

Why is peanut butter so popular in the United States?

Peanut butter is packed with protein, healthy fats and long-lasting energy. Americans enjoy it on toast, with apples, celery, bananas, rice cakes and, of course, in the classic PB&J sandwich. For many families, it is more than food—it's a childhood tradition.

How are California and Spain connected?

When Spanish explorers and settlers arrived in California, they introduced horses, olives, grapes, oranges, figs and many other foods that became part of California's identity.

Over the centuries, California has also shared its own innovations and traditions with the world. The Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich is one of those small but beloved pieces of American culture that is slowly finding its place in Spain.

How does food help us learn languages?

Food is one of the easiest ways to discover another culture.

Trying traditional recipes, learning their history and sharing meals together makes language learning meaningful and memorable.

At DarKha Academy, we use cooking and cultural experiences to help students learn English naturally while discovering the traditions behind the language.

Where can you try a PB&J sandwich in Spain?

Good news! Peanut butter is now easy to find in many Spanish supermarkets, including Mercadona, making it simple to prepare your own authentic PB&J at home.
